10 years ago, when the girls and I and my partner Lars decided to do 6397, I spent time working on a scrap book of images that meant something to me over many years.
I chose random photos of the city of New York that I love and has become home to me, photos from photographers whose work inspired me over the years and other random yet important visual memories that led up to the present.
Ari Marcopoulos’s photos were all over my scrap book - why? - for the obvious reason that before I even took up residence in NYC, Ari’s photos inspired me to want to live here. His photos are not often beautiful or comfortable in the normal sense, but they were beautifully real and depicted a culture not only of this city but universally of the world we’re living in. 6397 turns 10 years this year and to have the honor and opportunity to actually work with Ari Marcopoulos for our first ever campaign images was dream come true.
I will always remember the day we shot these photos. Ari with just a Konica and a Leica around his neck, the beautiful friendship of Syd and Nyja, our models, Studio 191’s David Ortega who helped us make this all happen, and importantly Jenny Smith, without whom there would be no 6397.
