Brian Nakahara’s practice began in the Creative Growth Youth Program, where he translated his interest in sports to a colorful aesthetic. Reducing things like hockey jerseys and baseball fields into symbolic design elements, Nakahara’s flattened, geometric compositions pay homage to his athletic heroes. In his portraits of individual athletes, often WWE wrestlers or female bodybuilders, Nakahara develops his own version of collectable cards.
